In the NBA there are a lot of what ifs, especially when it comes to the draft. So with the draft less than 2 days away we will discuss the questions that Raps fans think about all the time.
What if…
- Rob Babcock wasn’t hell bent on getting a center in 2004, when he selected Rafael Araujo, and instead selected Andre Iguodala who was considered to be a much better prospect.
- the Raptors selected Danny Granger, from small conference school New Mexico, instead of the athletically gifted Joey Graham who everyone is still desperately hoping will have his breakout season this year (after hoping the last 2 seasons as well).
- the Raptors selected Michael Redd instead of Morris Peterson in 2000. Both were seasoned NCAA shooting guards that had averaged about 17 ppg that year but Peterson’s stock was inflated after winning the title. Now one is an All Star and one is buried on the Hornets bench (hint: Peterson isn’t the All Star)
- the Raptors didn’t select “the next Jordan”, Jonathan Bender after he beat Jordan’s HS All American scoring record. Bender’s knees fell apart faster than you could say bust. Players selected after Bender: Rip Hamilton, Shawn Marion, Ron Artest, Andrei Kirilenko.
- the Raptors could keep all of the talented players they get from the draft to stay past their rookie contract.
Lets hope the Raptors can learn from their mistakes and make the right choice in this years draft. Tune in to our live blog during the draft to find out if the Raptors made the right choice.
