Just because he had some defensive success in the playoffs (which was subsequently overblown by commentators and analysts) does not mean he is necessarily an elite level defender. You know how many votes he got for all defensive team? 2. The same number as Kirk Hinrich, Joe Johnson, and JR Smith. Hardly in the company of "defensive superstars." The statistics over at 82games.com would also support the notion that Ariza was a good defender in a good defensive system, but hardly a superstar. I really want Ariza in Toronto. He is only 24 and would form an amazing young back court with Jose Calderon (27), DeRozan (19), and Ariza (24). DeRozan has amazing defensive potential and Ariza is already a defensive superstar so with the two of them the Raptors could finally keep opposing teams under 100. Thats my hope!
