Tanking - this off-season's Nehru jacket*

Speculation from Brian Windhorst has the Detroit Pistons interested in acquiring Rudy Gay from the Toronto Raptors, in exchange for the expiring contracts of Rodney Stuckey and Charlie Villanueva. As “expiring” is also the right word to describe the state of the careers of these two, one wonders what could possibly motivate Raps’ GM Masai Ujiri to even consider such a trade. That’s assuming he is – Windhorst is well-connected, but this chatter may only have emanated from the Detroit side. Regardless, I’m giving the story some credence, because it seems to fall in line with the actions of so many other NBA GMs at the moment. I’ve never seen such a huge number of teams trying to blow up their rosters in a determined race to the bottom. Want more proof? Go to Twitter

If I’m David Stern or Adam Silver, I’m starting to get really worried. Do the top guys at the NBA really want their teams’ GMs giving the impression they would rather lose than win? This situation could be worse than the referee scandal of a few years back.

From a Raps fan’s perspective, I’ve had more than enough of losing. If the Suns, Celtics, Magic, 76ers and possibly the Hawks want to be faddish and throw away next season in hopes of landing a superstar in the 2014 draft, I say let them. Somebody’s got to win the games those teams lose; why not us? Besides, it’s actually possible to lose at losing. Only one team can be the worst; only one team gets the #1 pick.

Can you imagine the reaction of coach Dwane Casey, who’s trying desperately to win so he can retain his job, when told Stuckey and Villanueva are on his roster? He might quit and ask for severance, on the grounds of constructive dismissal.

Masai, I implore you, resist the temptation. No tanking, please. Eric Bledsoe is off the market, so should DeMar DeRozan. Winning while rebuilding is not impossible; just look at the San Antonio Spurs.

*For those of you who have no idea what I mean about the Nehru jacket, here’s a quick synopsis, with photos.
