WOW – Rapture Nation, were you as giddy with excitement as I was when I learned we had signed the legendary Dwight Buycks? A guy like that could have gone anywhere, but he’s chosen to sign with us!! Between the headline and the last sentence, that’s four exclamation points I’ve used!! Now it’s six, and I’m still scrambling – OK, I got nothin’….
Who in the name of the Blessed Jerry West is Dwight Buycks??
A little research reveals he’s a 24-year-old point guard from Milwaukee who attended Marquette. He was undrafted, but managed to be picked up on a 10-day contract by Phoenix, then released. He’s had a cup of coffee in the D-League and played in France, where he was last season’s MVP with BCM Gravelines. Recently he was on the summer league squad of Oklahoma City. I’m a little ashamed that I haven’t noticed a guy with a dazzling pro resume like his, but sometimes one has to man-up and confess an oversight.
What little information I could grab, supplemented by a YouTube mixtape, shows a slashing point guard with decent form on his jump shot. I’m not sure the mixtape guy did our man any favours, as there are too many examples of Buycks taking long 2-balls for my liking. Nor did we see his defence or passing, but supposedly those are strengths.
I’m the guy who was urging Masai Ujiri to employ a cattle-call training camp, so I can hardly complain if he does so. Buycks will be battling with the almost-as-obscure Julyan Stone for the backup point guard slot. If Kyle Lowry wanted proof he’s still Numero Uno, he’s surely got it now. Let’s hope he stays healthy.
I must admit that I’m skeptical about a player of Buycks’ age who’s never stepped on the floor in an NBA game, but I’m quite willing to give ol’ Dwight (and our GM) the benefit of the doubt. Here’s your chance, young man. What have you got?
