I thought I would make a non-basketball related post about Amir Johnson. When Amir first arrived in Toronto from Detroit expectations were low on the court, and probably non-existent off. It would seem that Amir has shattered those expectations rising high above them, especially off the court. As some fans might already be aware, this week Amir Johnson went to Best Buy and bought every single copy of the Drake Album “Nothing Was The Same” and handed them out on Yonge and Dundas Square. Amir decided that he would be “buying his homie Drake’s Album to support him”. This is not just a nice personal gesture to Drake, but also supports an artist who is from Toronto in the process. There is a video of the event posted on youtube here
Amir has also been active with the Toronto community in many other ways. Amir took part in a zombie walk around town mixing with the local folk. During the season last year Amir has also hosted the 3rd annual “I roll with Amir” event. Amir treated 100 fans to tickets for a game, and later joined them at Real Sports Bar and Grill treating them all to a night of dinner and fun (as if free tickets to the game were not enough). As an added bonus for those attending the 3rd annual event, teammates Rudy Gay and DeMar DeRozan also showed up to give back to the fans.
I have always enjoyed Amir’s basketball ability during his time as a member of the Toronto Raptors, however his philanthropic efforts are also to be admired. Amir came to the Raptors as a young man, who in his time here seems to have blossomed into an adopted citizen of Toronto. Amir’s growth and love of the city Toronto has been a pleasure to experience and I look forward to more events from Amir. He is truly a class act!
