This is what the experts refer to as a “rubbish victory”. The Toronto Raptors entered the US Airways Center as losers of five straight, and 49 (combined) turnovers later they came out with a victory. Four Toronto reserves reached double-digit scoring and, after the first basket, the Raptors led from start to finish. Not a single Phoenix player reached double figures until Marcus Morris hit a three on the last possession of the game.

March 4, 2013; Oakland, CA, USA; Toronto Raptors small forward Rudy Gay (22) shoots the ball against the Golden State Warriors during the second quarter at Oracle Arena.
Sebastian Telfair came out firing against his former team, potting 10 points and dishing out 4 assists as the Raptors jumped out to a 14-point first half lead. Toronto was able to extend that advantage throughout the game, as Suns center Marcin Gortat came down with a fluke foot injury in the first quarter and was out for the game. Gortat had 8 points in 11 minutes at the time and is the Suns’ leading rebounder. The game turned into a blowout in the fourth, and gosh darn it I wish Quincy Acy were still on the team.

Three Stars

1) Amir Johnson, doin’ work. Led the bench with another efficient effort.

2) Terrence Ross, not because he did great, but because he finally hit a few shots. Still looks very much like a rookie, though.

3) Sebastian Telfair. He was very active on the night, scoring, dishing and grabbing steals. Telfair, an undersized guard with super-sized shorts, has bounced around a bit in his 9-year career, never quite finding his niche in the league. He’ll be competing short-term with John Lucas for minutes, but in my honest opinion, I don’t think he’s a keeper. We’ll see.

Three Flops

1) Hamed Haddadi. o-for-1 with 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 9 minutes. Oops.

2) Rudy Gay. Just 5 points from RG22, but it’s not like we needed more. On the plus side, his 2 turnovers might have tied a career-low.

3) Dwane Casey, for continuing his ridiculous use of Jonas Valanciunas: start him and then completely forget about him for the rest of the game (JV did come back in garbage time, but only for a few minutes and he finished with just 20 minutes of PT). But that’s for another post.

The Raps head to Hollywood on Friday to play spoiler against the playoff-hunting Los Angeles Lakers, who just pulled off a massive comeback against the New Orleans Hornets Wednesday on the strength of Kobe Bryant’s 42 points and 12 assists. Expect a thriller on Friday!
