Wayne Embry only had the job for a month in between Babcock and Colangelo’s terms as GM. Though this might have meant that Embry wouldn’t have had time to do anything particularly meaningful for the Raptors, he actually proved the opposite. Embry was a fit manager for the Raptors, epitomizing the line, “here for a good time, not a long time.”
When he took the job, the franchise was at an all-time low. Thanks to some impressive moves, Embry helped breath new life into the Raptors. The team had just finished a 27-55 season, but would earn a 47-35 record just the next year. What he did was simple: clearing cap space to allow the next GM to be effective.
Embry sent Jalen Rose, the second first-round pick the Raps received in the Carter trade and some money to the New York Knicks. In return, Toronto had the pleasure of welcoming Antonio Davis back to town. Plus, the Knicks ended up wasting the pick on draft-bust Renaldo Balkman.
Because of the length of his stint in Toronto, Embry can also be credited with not making any mistakes. That feat goes a long way in a list like this.
