Starting Point Guard: Cory Joseph

Honorable Mentions: T.J Ford, Jarrett Jack, Rafer Alston, Alvin Williams

Admittedly, this was a tough decision.

Cory Joseph got the slight nod over former Raptor Jose Calderon, who played for the Raptors for eight seasons. I also wind up choosing Cory over T.J. Ford, Jarrett Jack, Rafer Alston or Alvin Williams as well. However, strong cases could definitely be made for them.

Although Calderon gave Raptors fans many great memories with big time threes and pocket pick and roll passes, I believe that Cory Joseph has stole the City’s heart for multiple reasons.

First, Cory Joseph is a Pickering, Ontario native. He is the second Canadian to play for the Raptors, the first being Jamaal Magloire. Because of this, Raptor fans have embraced Cory.

I remember attending a Raptors game in 2013 when the Spurs came to town. Joseph received some well deserved minutes when the Spurs were up big. When the announcer announced his name, Raptors fans showed him appreciation that I have never before heard for an opponent.

Cory Joseph played with a poise and maturity from day one which immediately made him perfect for a Spurs system predicated on selflessness and ball movement. He quickly became one of Gregg Popovich’s favorite players.

Thus, for Cory to leave a situation with the Spurs in which he was basically locked for a Conference Finals Appearance every year, was a very bold and noble move. He truly showed his unwavering love for his Toronto and his roots.

This sentiment was echoed by Raptors Ambassador and world-renowned artist Drake who showed him love in his song, Charged Up, in which he says,

"“I win a ring and I bring it home like I’m Corey Joe.”"

This was reference to Cory winning a title with the Spurs in 2014, but still choosing to return to his hometown, Toronto, despite the championship momentum.

Finally, Cory Joseph is beloved by Toronto because he is a true professional, There were periods in the 2016-2017 year in which he was victim to many DNP- CD’s (Did Not Play, Coach’s Decision). but never complained and was always up on the bench, rooting for his teammates.

He also stepped up in Lowry’s 22 game absences due to injuries. His ability to stay ready was never more on display than in game four of the second round against the Cleveland Cavaliers in which he posted gaudy numbers of 20 points 6 rebounds and 12 dimes in a heartbreaking loss.

Keep doing your thing CoJo. You would be my all time favorite Raptor if not for the next guy on this list.
