The Toronto Raptors have had several great players in their history. When fans of the NBA think of Toronto’s best players, Vince Carter and Chris Bosh come to mind. It’s no secret that there’s been a new face of the franchise since them: DeMar DeRozan.

There was a point in the Raptors star-duo era where fans didn’t know who was the true leader of the team. It was thought that Kyle Lowry in 2015 was emerging as the Raptors true leader. Lowry was going into his 30’s, it’s only a matter of time before age catches up. DeMar DeRozan still just 28 years old, is only getting better and wants to do whatever it takes to win in Toronto.

Is DeMar DeRozan one of the best players in the league?

When asked about his amazing scoring ability, Kyle Lowry said this.

"“That’s what people don’t understand.” said Lowry “That man is one of the best players in the NBA. It don’t matter if he shoots three’s or not, he’s still going to get you buckets. That’s what he does: He’s a natural bucket getter.” via Blake Murphy"

Whether you like DeMar or not, he’s one of the best scorers in the NBA. His work-ethic, athleticism and ability to finish/draw fouls are just some of the things he’s commonly praised for. Even players like Kevin Durant, can’t help but praise DeMar’s footwork.

"“He’s just way more athletic than I am first of all, so his body can move a little different, but his pace is amazing.” said Durant. “He’s a guy I’ve been studying lately just because of his footwork. Every time I see him I’m just looking at how his body, his footwork. I think that’s where I can get better.”"

Lowry’s scoring has dropped while moving into a more ball-movement friendly offense. However, Lowry doesn’t have to be a 20 PPG scorer with all the Raptors young talent emerging. DeMar isn’t having his best offensive season, but he’s fairly close while being more efficient. He’s averaging 25 PTS, 4.6 ASTS, 4.4 REBS, 1.4 STLS on 48% FG, 30% 3PT and 83% FT in 34.5 minutes.

Notably, DeMar’s shooting is his most efficient in his career, his True Shooting Percentage is 57%. His scoring naturally took a hit because of his usage, his usage rating has dropped from 34.3% last year, to 31.3%. The Raptors star has done a great job moving the ball around, he’s assisted on 22% of Raptors shots.

While DeRozan is having a great season so far, he’ll need to limit his 3 T0’s as he’s become a bit more careless with the ball.

So is DeRozan one of the best players in the league? No doubt. He’s far from the disrespectful No.36 ranking he was placed in on Sports Illustrated Top 100 players. Where he was placed right behind Bucks Khris Middleton who isn’t having the same success as DeMar.

Is he the greatest to ever play in Toronto? That is yet to be answered.

Some would think bringing a ring to Toronto would give him the bonus points he needs to edge over Carter.
