Brook Lopez

What he provides

Brook Lopez is a former all-star who is a gifted offensive player capable of scoring in a variety of ways. Lopez has a refined post-game that can be used in end of shot-clock situations or to punish smaller defenders on switches. Previously a mid-range shooter, recently Lopez has added a three-point shot.

Defensively, Lopez has his warts. He has never been a great rebounder, down to under four per game this season, and is also a liability on the perimeter. However, he is large and does provide some rim-protection around the basket.

How he fits in

Lopez provides virtually no positional flexibility. His role for the Raptors would be exclusively as a backup center to Jonas Valanciunas.

As good as Lopez is, particularly on the offensive end, this would likely push Poeltl out of the rotation on most nights. However, Poeltl would definitely still be useful as a matchup big and would probably receive time if the Raptors were in a crunch defensively.

Path to acquiring him

Rumors have teetered back-and-forth whether Lopez will be available for buyout consideration. Less than two weeks ago Lopez was visibly upset on the bench and there have been rumors he has not been happy in his role at times.

If Lopez were to become available the Raptors main competitor would likely be the Warriors. Golden State provides him with a better chance at minutes and (sorry Raptors fans) a title. San Antonio also seems like a logical fit as Lopez provides a similar fit to Pau Gasol. Either way the Raptors have there hands-full in a recruiting pitch.
