Philadelphia 76ers receive: C.J. Miles

Toronto Raptors receive: Jerryd Bayless, 2019 Sacramento 2nd round pick, 2020 Mavericks 2nd round pick

Why the 76ers say yes:

This deal only makes sense if Philly fails to acquire a big-name free agent, something that appears more and more likely by the day. If they are unable to acquire a big-name, Miles provides the team with another talented wing shooter.

With Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid on the court, providing them with spacing will always be a priority. Miles is a cheap option to do so, giving up only a non-contributor in Jerryd Bayless and two of their tremendous stash of 2nd round picks. (Smh Hinkie)

If Philly strikes out on the market this summer, they will want to maintain flexibility to attack it again, next year. Miles contract is for two more seasons (technically a player option), but with a reasonable $8.7 million dollar deal, the team should have no problem moving on if need be.

Why the Raptors say yes:

C.J. Miles is 31 years old. If the Toronto Raptors are going to seriously compete for an NBA title, it is likely going to be after Miles is no longer a real perimeter option. Aging wings are like fresh produce, you can’t always be certain when they will go bad, but when they do they turn fast.

Miles has the ability to step-in and contribute right away for Philadelphia next season, he also could hit his turning point. Toronto escaping with an expiring deal and two second round picks helps the team take a step-forward in building around the young core, even if it forces them to take a step back in the intermediate.
