Toronto Raptors: Three young free-agent targets
Tyler Ulis
After starting 43 games last season, the Phoenix Suns decided to part ways with Tyler Ulis. Unsurprising, with a loaded point guard roster of Brandon Knight and Elie Okobo, tough decisions need to be made.
If signed by the Raptors, the 5’10” point guard should feel right at home next to fellow vertically challenged individuals such as Fred VanVleet and Kyle Lowry.
Like Lowry and VanVleet, Ulis is tough as nails. He scraps, competes, and attempts to make up for his physical limitations defensively. Unfortunately, at 5’10” and 150 pounds, there is only so much you can do.
On the offensive end, Ulis is more than adept. He’s lightning quick and finds his way into the lane, opening up opportunities for others. Ulis averaged 6.8 assists per 36 minutes last season, assisting to the likes of Dragan Bender and Marquese Chriss.
Defensively, Ulis’ limitations are never going away. However, with a multitude of capable defensive wings, Toronto can hide him relatively well. Certainly better than Phoenix, alongside Devin Booker.
It’s likely that none of these players will become even rotation level pieces. Sadly those are just the realities of signing minimum free-agents. However, they are worth a shot, and Toronto would be smart to provide them one.
