Toronto Raptors: Creating the team’s all-time roster
Antonio Davis(2000-2001): Third Center/Possible Backup Center
Unfortunately, Antonio Davis, one of the most unsung heroes in Toronto Raptors history, won’t earn steady minutes for this hypothetical team. Davis is a solid contributor and an all star, but will rank third on our center depth chart behind Chris Bosh (who will play at PF and Center) and Jonas Valanciunas.
Make no mistakes about it though, 2000-2001 Antonio Davis was a flat-out stud. In his age 32 season, Davis averaged a double-double and was a playoff team’s second best player. Davis also averaged a career high in blocks, swatting away 1.9 per contest.
What keeps Davis from making our consistent rotation is his efficiency. Davis averaged a field goal percentage of just 43.3-percent during his all-star campaign. Part of that was due to the era he played in, but he 43-percent for a center isn’t good no matter how you spin it.
Davis will certainly become more efficient with a better surrounding cast, including the absence of 37 year-old Charles Oakley clogging the lane. But with JV and Bosh already on the team, he won’t receive consistent minutes with the exception of injury.
Now, the ultimate question: Could this team beat the current Golden State Warriors? The top-tier talent is quite the same. Bosh and Carter were never top-five NBA players like Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry.
But this team’s depth would be overwhelming, and with a slew of talented two-way wings, I have confidence that this all-time Raptors squad would beat the Warriors in six.
