Where Butler could end up?

It was reported earlier this summer that Butler was interested in playing with Kyrie Irving next year. Irving can opt out of the final year of his contract. There has been speculation that they could team up with either of the teams in New York. This brings us back to Butler’s trade demand.

Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Butler wants to be traded to one of three teams. He would be prepared to sign an extension with the New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets or Los Angeles Clippers. This is a surprising list given Butler’s history with Towns and Wiggins. All three teams are young. None are ready to compete for a playoff spot next season, let alone a championship. But all three have cap space and the ability to sign a big name free agent next summer.

For now, the Wolves are telling rival executives that they intend to keep Butler. Despite their current stance, it’s doubtful that the Wolves will be able to resist Butler’s demand forever. The longer that he is on the roster, the more his trade value diminishes. Eventually, the Wolves will have to move Butler or risk losing him for nothing.

Just because Butler has said that he only wants to sign with the Knicks, Nets or Clippers, that doesn’t mean another team can’t trade for him. Last year, Paul George reported that he wanted to play for the Los Angeles Lakers. He was subsequently traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder and signed an extension this summer.

Kawhi Leonard told the San Antonio Spurs that he wanted to play in Los Angeles. Despite his request, Leonard is now a member of the Toronto Raptors.

There are a number of teams with reported interest in Butler. One of those teams is the Raptors. It has been suggested that the Raptors should go all in and make a play for the disgruntled swingman.
