The Toronto Raptors’ G League affiliate, Raptors 905, participated in the draft. Here’s a peek at the hopefuls our team selected.
The anual NBA G League Draft was held Saturday afternoon. Players eligible to be selected ranged from NBA veterans to undrafted college prospects. Raptors 905 selected 25th in each of the draft’s four rounds however, opted not to make a selection in the final round.
Round one saw Toronto’s G League affiliate select LeRon Black from Illinois. At 22-years of age he could be a project for the 905 moving forward.
Black averaged 15 points and 5.3 rebounds per game last year in college. At 6’7″ Black is at his best in and around the basket but can also pose a threat from beyond the arc in pick-and-pop situations.
The 22-year-old will need to improve his overall quickness and athleticism however, he did log heavy minutes in college a season ago. Black was a fan favourite at the University of Illinois and hopefully he can bring that same charisma to the 905.
In round-two the 905 selected former Arizona point guard Parker Jackson-Cartwright. A former five-star recruit, Cartwright played all four years at the college level.
Last year the 23-year old played in 32 minutes per game while averaging 7.1 points, 4.5 assists, as well as, 1.4 steals. Cartwright may not be a high scoring guard however, he is an excellent play maker. He ranked 7th in assists per game in the PAC-12 a year ago.
Back when he was a highly touted high school prospect, Raptors 905’s newest point guard stared in the documentary “At All Costs.” If you have not seen the film it can be found on Netflix and other streaming services. It is always cool to see the progression of players at the high school level as the move up to the professional ranks.
Bryson Scott out of Purdue Fort Wayne was selected by the team in the third round. Scott was a starter in all 33 contests last season.
The 24-year old averaged 22 points per game in his final college season. Scott finished the year ranked 10th in the NCAA in points per game. He also scored 30 points six times during the 2017-2018 campaign.
Scott was also selected to play in the NBAC Resse’s College All-Star Game to cap off his senior year.
Raptors 905 are getting an elite scorer with this pick. If Scott’s game can translate over to the G League the 905 may find themselves with an absolute steal. Having played all four years of college basketball Scott should already be a mature player.
Next up for Raptors 905 will be the season opener on November 2nd. Until then the team will continue to fine tune its roster. There is no doubt that the 905 are looking to make a third straight finals appearance.
