Fred VanVleet

It’s been a bit of a weird season for Fred VanVleet whose numbers on paper look better than his play on the court has so far this year. Fred has a similar usage, shooting percentage, and turnover percentage as 2017-2018. His on/off numbers have decreased some, but they’ve remained relatively constant compared to the rest of the bench.

Yet, this year feels different for Mr. “Bet on Yourself.” He doesn’t seem to have the same confidence or swagger as last year. He’s not leading one of the best units in the NBA like last year.

Even with this year feeling a bit down, FVV is still a huge asset for Toronto. Re-signed during last year’s team-friendly environment, VanVleet is currently in the first year of a two-year $18 million contract. At $9 million per season, he’s underpaid for an elite sixth-man. A bar Fred has still cleared halfway through this season.

In terms of positional scarcity, point guards are somewhere in-between centers and forwards. Teams aren’t completely starved for point guards like they are for above-average wing play. However, very few teams have a backup point guard nearly as talented as Fred VanVleet.

A young, talented point guard under team control, is still is an extremely valuable player.
