Toronto Raptors vs. Philadelphia 76ers: Matchup Breakdown
Danny Green vs. J.J. Redick
This is a matchup of two of the game’s best three-point marksmen, and two of the most experienced players in the series.
Redick is slightly more versatile on offense. However, Green is a vastly superior defender.
Redick likes to be in constant motion on offense, flying around the court, running past screens, and trying to free himself for three-pointers or midrange jump shots. He and Joel Embiid run a deadly dribble hand-off that forces defenses to commit to one of them, leaving the other wide open.
The Raptors need to run Redick off the three-point line and force him to make decisions on the move, where historically, he has struggled. On the other end of the court, the Raptors will attack Redick, forcing him to switch onto Leonard or Pascal Siakam, both of which are a matchup nightmare for him.
Philadelphia will likely attempt to run Green off the three-point line as well, and he needs to be aggressive when they do. Green can still finish at the rim if defenses focus too much on his shooting, and he’s going to need to take what the 76ers give him.
Redick will often be tasked with guarding Lowry, while Green will likely guard one of Simmons or Butler. Both will have tough defensive assignments that will drain them of significant energy, which is something to keep an eye on.
In the end, though, much of the Green-Redick matchup will come down to whoever can hit the higher percentage of open three-point shots. They are two of the best in the league at doing so – it’ll be fun to watch.
