2. Los Angeles Lakers – Jaylen Brown

Original pick: Brandon Ingram

With the second overall pick, the Los Angeles Lakers try something new and select the University of California forward, Jaylen Brown.

There’s a lot for the Lakers to like about Brown, he’s a solid two-way player, highly athletic and only 20 years old at the time of being drafted. Initially, the Lakers took Brandon Ingram with the second overall pick, but he has since been used in leverage for a deal that brought Anthony Davis. As such, Ingram now plies his trade in New Orleans with the Pelicans.

In this reality, the Lakers don’t know that they are trading for Davis. Even if they did, Brown is a far more enticing prospect than Ingram.

Brown has averaged 11.2 points, four rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game across three seasons so far. While those numbers aren’t god-like, it’s easy to remember that Brown has been playing a complementary role to the likes of Isaiah Thomas, Kyrie Irving, and this season, Kemba Walker.

Maybe that role has deterred his progress a bit, especially now he has Jayson Tatum to contend with and the dynamic Marcus Smart. Brown might only ever be the third or fourth-best player on a roster, but that’s still a solid place to be.

The Lakers pick up a nice two-way complement for the recently drafted D’Angelo Russell and can slot him in at small forward or shooting guard.
