5. Patrick McCaw

It might seem odd that a player who had a very limited role last season (averaged 13 minutes per game and four during the playoffs) would be of great value for the Raptors but hold on for just a second. Patrick McCaw has the ability to be a very integral part for Toronto in the near future, all while being on a generous contract for the team.

McCaw just inked a 2-year/$8 million deal with the team this offseason, a solid deal for someone of his capabilities. McCaw can provide great defense, specifically with his awareness, long limbs, and above-average athleticism.

McCaw averaged 2.2 steals per 36 minutes last season, the highest figure on the team. He can disrupt passing lanes and force the opposing squad to commit turnovers, a skill that can’t be taught. He defensive instincts are what has the Raptors confident in him for at least the next two seasons.

With the Raptors being a defensive-minded bunch, McCaw will fit right in and give good minutes on that side of the floor. However, he will need to increase his offensive production if the Raptors are to see true value.

Even though he has been in the league for three years, McCaw still hasn’t found his way offensively. In a year where Toronto will need more offensive production at the wing position, this is the perfect time for McCaw to prove his worth. If he can improve his three-point shooting and become a better shot-creator, he could find himself getting big minutes as the season progresses.

On the business side of things, this is a very friendly deal for Toronto, as they are only tied to Mr. McCaw for two years. If they believe he isn’t panning out to their expectations after year two, the team can move on with no consequences.

In the meantime, they are getting a player who is a plug-and-play piece defensively, with the upside to become a real contributor.
