Victory lap celebrations

Look, it’s pretty simple: Barring horrific injuries or life-threatening events, Raptors fans should enjoy this season no matter what happens. To paraphrase Jay-Z, “the Raptors could go 0-82 and…” well, you know the rest.

Some sports fans wait decades to see their team win a championship. Some wait their whole lives. Often, it never happens. The Raptors’ front office created a one-year window for the franchise to win its first title, and they actually did it.

No matter how many times you say or read or write that sentence, it’s hard to comprehend exactly what it took. It’s hard to process just how much had to go right, and just how lucky Toronto had to be at times, for it all to come together.

Fans had a chance to enjoy that feeling all off-season, but now, three-quarters of the eight-man rotation that won the title is about to go back to work.

Enjoy watching those champions. Enjoy ring night. Enjoy Leonard’s return (and give that man the greatest standing ovation in the history of Toronto sports). Enjoy watching the rest of the former Raptors receive their rings: Green, C.J. Miles, Delon Wright, and Jonas Valanciunas. They all helped build a special basketball team.

As for the parts that remain: They’ve got a long path ahead to creating another one.
