Andrew Hughes: “Rondae Hollis-Jefferson is our highest draft pick.”

My friends that statement above is wrong. During the Portland Trail Blazers and Toronto Raptors game, I mistakenly misheard a statistic given over the telecast. I originally thought that Rondae Hollis-Jefferson was indeed the highest pick on the Toronto Raptors, so I tweeted it accordingly since it seemed wild.

Well, that immediately got the ball rolling and people were floored with that stat. But, I was wrong. And, not only was I wrong, I was WAY wrong. After a few lovely Twitter-heads gave me an update, I actually double-checked this information and came to the conclusion that, in fact, Stanley Johnson was the highest draft pick on the team sitting at eight.

Of course, I immediately tried to correct my mistake, but the damage had been done. Over 17,000 people had this tweet go by their stream, so basically I am peddling the fake news we so dearly want to eradicate.

Be that as it may, I found some more interesting news that I subsequently tweeted:

Look at those draft rankings! First of all, Stanley Johnson, our highest draft pick, is buried on the bench behind a boatload of people who were barely picked in the first round and some that weren’t even picked at all!

While the front office severely mishandled the championship ring debacle, they at least are bold enough to find talent wherever it lies, which almost makes me want to forgive them for giving Drake a ring (never mind, I’ll never do that).

So, perhaps I made a mistake, but ultimately it led to uncovering some truth about the players on this team. The whole underdog persona that the Toronto Raptors are built on is truly where they stand when it comes to the draft.

But, don’t tell Kyle Lowry that.
