Toronto Raptors: 5 free agency targets to watch this postseason
By Jack Long
1. Kawhi Leonard
A guy can dream right? It is definitely a long shot, but not an impossibility.
Kawhi Leonard and the Los Angeles Clippers have been quietly playing some impressive basketball and look poised to compete against the other Western Conference powerhouses. All signs point to Kawhi re-signing with the Clippers this summer, but an early playoff exit could change things.
The Toronto Raptors should do their due diligence on an old friend.
Early playoff exit or not, the Toronto Raptors should be calling The Klaw’s phone come free agency time. If he ever wanted to stay in Toronto it probably would have been to run it back after their NBA Championship, but it doesn’t hurt to ask.
The Raptors would have a really tough pitch, to Kawhi Leonard and ownership. The Raptors would have to waive the likes of Aron Baynes, Rodney Hood, Paul Watson, DeAndre’ Bembry and Chris Boucher, along with not re-signing Lowry and hoping Gary Trent Jr.’s RFA cap hold is very minimal.
Even then, the contract would still be much less than the $36 million per season the Los Angeles Clippers can offer him.
Even if he isn’t a realistic target, I think we can all agree we’d like him to watch him take down LeBron James right?
An exciting free agent period is on deck for the Toronto Raptors.
This offseason appears to be a monumental one for the Toronto Raptors organization. With loads of cap space and a few major holes to fill – it is sure to be an exciting one.
Luckily for Masai Ujiri, this free agency class is as strong as we’ve seen in years and offers a ton of options for the team up North.
