Raptors: Player comparisons for Evan Mobley, Jalen Green, Jalen Suggs
By Mike Luciano
The Toronto Raptors, in all likelihood, will use the No. 4 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft on one of three players, as G League stud Jalen Green, USC big man Evan Mobley, and Gonzaga maestro Jalen Suggs have established a rigidly-defined second tier of prospects after projected No. 1 pick Cade Cunningham.
Mobley profiles as a center that can do it all, as his mobility, finishing inside, and defensive potential are all excellent. Green’s offense gives him perhaps the highest con-Cade ceiling in this class, as his G League stint showed how advanced his game was despite his age.
Suggs, who appears to be the most likely player of this trio to end up in Toronto based on the mock drafts, is an NBA-ready floor general that offers defense and clutch shooting. The Raptors are spoiled for choice here.
Projecting what these players can be at the NBA level might be the deciding factor in ironing out who they should target in this class. What players could the Raptors look to in order to gauge what Mobley, Suggs, and Green could look like a half-decade down the line?
Player comparisons for 3 potential Toronto Raptors picks at No. 4
Evan Mobley
Low-End: Jarrett Allen
Mobley will be able to block shots, run the floor well for a big man his size, and finish shots inside, and that combination of skills is about to help Allen get a massive payday this offseason. Mobley’s floor remains very high.
However, if he fails to develop a 3-point shot, much like Allen has struggled with, he may not take over the game on the offensive end like Toronto may expect him to. Landing in the right spot will be critical for him.
Mid-Range: Bam Adebayo
Adebayo looked a bit raw coming out of Kentucky, but Miami has helped him develop into one of the game’s premier young big men. With the defensive chops to switch onto guards and a continuously expanding offensive bag, Adebayo is a solid player for Mobley to watch and mold his game after.
No matter where he ends up, Mobley will be a matchup nightmare the very second he touches down in the pros. Adebayo is a quality two-way threat with the athleticism to continue improving, and if the Raptors end up getting someone in that tier at No. 4, that would constitute a job well done.
High-End: Anthony Davis
Mobley, despite his bushels of hype, isn’t the same level of prospect as Davis, as The Brown was coming off one of the most dominant college seasons ever. With the Pelicans and Lakers, Davis’ ability to score and block shots has him on the fast track to Hall of Fame induction. If Mobley fulfills 100% of his potential, could he reach those same heights?
Mobley is thinner than Davis, and he might not have as high of a defensive ceiling, but in much the same way Davis became unstoppable in New Orleans because of his rare athletic ability for his size, Mobley could find similar success if he continues to hit his stride.
