C Jakob Poeltl
Poeltl has been linked to the Raptors for quite some time, as Ujiri might be trying to reacquire the player he used a No. 9 overall pick on and subsequently shipped out of town in the Kawhi Leonard deal. While he’s an elite defensive center, he has some red flags attached to him.
The reports on Poeltl’s price tag vary, but two recent dumps have stated that the impending free agent could either cost multiple first-round picks or be the focal point of a three-team trade in which Trent is relocated. Poeltl would give the Raptors a starting center, but let’s look at the negatives for a second.
The Toronto Raptors shouldn’t overpay for Jakob Poeltl.
The Raptors need shooting around Pascal Siakam and Scottie Barnes, as it both maximizes their passing ability and allows them to be aggressive driving to the rim in an unclogged paint. Poeltl would make Toronto worse offensively if Trent is included in the trade.
Poeltl might be cheaper than Trent due to his position and age, but the Raptors would be totally foolish to trade away a young, ascending guard for a veteran anchor in the paint who can bolt in free agency. If Toronto really wants him, they could try to acquire him in the offseason without moving so much premium capital.
