Toronto Raptors fans have every right to be frustrated with President of Basketball Operations Masai Ujiri and GM Bobby Webster right now. After failing to make many improvements in the offseason, a 48-win team has now withered on the vine to a point where a trade has almost become necessary.

The Raptors signed the oft-injured Otto Porter Jr. in free agency while retaining Thad Young and Chris Boucher and drafting Christian Koloko. All three of the veterans have underperformed, while Koloko’s admittedly quality play for a second-rounder has not moved the needle one iota.

Webster was reminded of just how far away this roster is from contention against the Utah Jazz. During a deplorable first quarter in which even established stars like Pascal Siakam and Scottie Barnes missed a half-dozen layups and saw many shots blocked by Walker Kessler, Webster reportedly shook his head in confusion.

Raptors fans who saw these struggles coming from a mile away were blown away by the fact that Webster appears to be blindsided by the shortcomings of this roster. If fans could see these performances in the windshield, why couldn’t he?

Toronto Raptors fans lashed out at Bobby Webster.

Rather than keeping their first-round pick and using it on Kessler, who blocked six shots in the first half, Webster made the trade for Young and the pick that became Christian Koloko. Neither of them are rotation mainstays, while Kessler and Malaki Barnham are improving every day in Utah and San Antonio.

The most common refrain Raptors fans leaned back on was the fact that Webster looks surprised and dismayed at the results despite the fact that he played a big part in fashioning this roster. Why is he surprised when the Raptors looked like this at their worst last year?

Webster and Ujiri have helped the team win a championship in the past, and no one can ever take that away from them. Having said that, the NBA will always be a “what have you done for me lately?” operation. Webster’s status with the fans is on thin ice.

Webster can get back in the good graces of this fanbase if he nails it at the trade deadline and sets the Raptors up for success in the future by getting a haul of picks for a player like OG Anunoby. At this point in time, however, Webster needs to take the slings and arrows of a fanbase that is rightfully upset with how the team has performed.
