Raptors news: Steve Nash impresses, high-scoring wing worked out
By Nolan Fluke
Since the firing of former Coach of the Year Nick Nurse, the Toronto Raptors have been quite slow to fill their coaching position. While other openings have already been cut to finalists, the Raptors recently interviewed Steve Nash but still seem to be searching. According to NBA analyst Marc Stein, it is all for a reason.
In his latest Substack post (subscription required), Stein claims that the Raptors are very certain of who they want to hire as their next head coach. They are perfectly content to move at their own pace as their preferred candidate is not in line for any of the other openings.
Looking at who the front office has interviewed so far, the only candidates to fit that description would be JJ Reddick, former Raptors assistant Sergio Scariolo, and Nash. Reddick is wrapped up in an analyst position with ESPN, and Scariolo is coaching Virtus Bologna in Italy and the Spanish national team, but Nash is currently without a job.
Nash has not reportedly interviewed with any of the other openings in Detroit, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, or Phoenix. It should also be noted that Sportsnet’s Michael Grange has reported the Raptors were quite impressed with the former Nets coach. The only hint of information fans has received about the coaching hunt thus far.
