The Toronto Raptors’ fanbase seems to be largely against the idea of “running it back” this offseason, as last year’s very disappointing result has some pining for either a complete rebuild or a retool that would include making some lateral moves that keep the squad competitive.

With OG Anunoby and Pascal Siakam being mentioned in trade rumors and the three-headed monster of Fred VanVleet, Jakob Poeltl, and Gary Trent Jr. all potential free agents that could leave, there are several possible futures in which the roster is upended.

Unfortunately for that crowd, the idea of starting from scratch this season may not be what the rest of the front office wants. GM Bobby Webster made it sound like most of last season’s squad will be prioritized.

We want all Fred, Gary, and Jak back. I think it’s been clear from the end of the season and the team’s play toward the end of the year,” Webster said via TSN. Bringing back Poeltl makes all the sense in the world, and Trent is the type of player this team needs, but bringing them all back might be a very risky situation.

  • The latest mock draft from The Ringer has the Raptors using the No. 13 pick on Indiana guard Jalen Hood-Schifino. The former Hoosier fits in with Bobby Webster’s ideal vision of a Raptors draft pick, as he can defend multiple positions and attack the basket while showing solid potential as a shooter.
  • In that same mock draft, Kevin O’Connor reported that Toronto and the Washington Wizards are considering a trade that would vault them into the top three of the NBA Draft. While Washington can dangle names like Bradley Beal and Kristaps Porzingis, the Raptors could send players like OG Anunoby or Pascal Siakam to Charlotte or Portland.

NBA news

  • Teams around the league are monitoring the situation surrounding Zion Williamson and the New Orleans Pelicans. Around the same time reports leaked that hinted at New Orleans’ interest in moving into the top three picks in the 2023 NBA Draft, Marc Stein mentioned that Zion being traded is more likely than a Brandon Ingram move.
  • Multiple executives around the NBA, per Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report, expect the Miami Heat to shed salary, citing the idea that Pat Riley and Micky Arison would be hesitant to dip deep into the luxury tax. Big names could move, but role players like Max Strus and Gabe Vincent might not be retained.
