The 3 most overpaid Toronto Raptors in the 2023-24 season
By Mike Luciano
1. Chris Boucher ($11.7 million)
Boucher has averaged 9.4 points in each of the last two seasons, which shows that he is a quality backup big man who can defend and finish at the rim at an adequate level. Masai Ujiri still needs to ask if all of those numbers are worth an eight-figure deal for someone in his 30s.
The Raptors are committed to Precious Achiuwa, and the McDaniels signing shows further dissatisfaction with Boucher’s roller-coaster play. The guy who averaged 13.6 points per game in Tampa might be gone, and the Raptors are paying above market for a player of Boucher’s caliber.
Will the Toronto Raptors keep Chris Boucher?
If the Raptors are going to make a trade between now and the start of the season, Boucher might be the best player who could reasonably be moved on the Raptors’ roster. He’s valuable enough to acquire and slot into a rotation, but not so skilled that he is viewed as an immovable piece.
While not an egregious overpay that limits Toronto’s ability to do business, the Raptors likely aren’t thrilled with the fact that a player who has been benched in back-to-back seasons for short stints due to wildly inconsistent play is one of the more well-compensated players on the roster.
