The Toronto Raptors find themselves in a very unusual position. While many are doubting their ability to compete for a championship in the next few years, Masai Ujiri and the rest of the squad are doing everything in their power to show they should be taken seriously.
The Raptors will likely get the NBA season started with a run of games against some of their old Eastern Conference foes, which will allow them to gauge just how far ahead of the curve they are. With Scottie Barnes ready to develop and Pascal Siakam still in town, the sky is the limit for this frontcourt.
It could also reveal many shortcomings this roster currently has. With Fred VanVleet now a member of the Rockets, it might be difficult for Toronto to pack the same offensive punch as they did in past seasons.
The Raptors will also embark on an in-season tournament schedule for the first time in the history of the franchise. Will they come out of that with some silverware, or will they end up on the wrong end of the NBA’s latest experiment?
