What’s the Minimum NBA salary for 2023-24?
By Mike Luciano
One of the hallmarks of any good NBA general manager is the ability to find quality additions on minimum contracts. Both Bobby Webster and Masai Ujiri have combined to make the Toronto Raptors one of the league’s exemplary franchises in terms of finding value with the NBA minimum salary without overpaying.
The Raptors have used veteran minimum deals to populate the back half of the team’s roster while giving younger players similar contracts as they try to prove themselves in the NBA. After avoiding paying Fred VanVleet a ton of money, his salary was dispersed among multiple cheaper players.
The NBA’s salary cap is a complicated maze of rules that can be tough to digest. What exactly will a “minimum contract” look like in the 2023 season?
What is the minimum NBA salary?
There is no absolute minimum salary in the league, as the floor of what an NBA player can earn is scaled based on how many years of playing time they have in. There is a $2 million difference between the minimum salary for a rookie and a veteran with 10 years in the league.
- 0 years: $1,119,563
- 1 year: $1,801,769
- 2 years: $2,019,706
- 3 years: $2,092,354
- 4 years: $2,165,000
- 5 years: $2,346,614
- 6 years: $2,528,233
- 7 years: $2,709,849
- 8 years: $2,891,467
- 9 years: $2,905,861
- 10+ years: $3,196,448
Keep in mind the fact that the 2023-24 figures shown above are only for veterans who signed new contracts in the 2023 season. Those who signed minimum deals before 2023 are working with a different set of numbers.
If you are a veteran player with more than three years of experience and you sign a one-year minimum contract, the deal will only count for $2,019,706 against the cap. This is done in order to entice teams to choose older veterans over younger, cheaper players.
The money in a minimum contract becomes prorated to the day a player signs if they choose to ink a minimum deal in the middle of the season.
Toronto Raptors minimum contracts 2023
The Raptors signed aging guard Garrett Temple to a one-year contract that puts him firmly at the end of the bench. Second-year player Christian Koloko is also getting paid just $1.79 million this season. Jeff Dowtin’s $2 million contract is non-guaranteed. Exhibit 10 contract signings Kevin Obanor and Mouhamadou Gueye could make $1.1 million if they sign NBA deals this season.
