3 Issues the Toronto Raptors must sort out during training camp
By Mike Luciano
2. Jeff Dowtin
Dowtin is the only player who is currently playing on a non-guaranteed contract. With the Raptors currently having maxed out all of their guaranteed contracts for 2023, the only way that Dowtin can make the roster is to be more impressive than one of the tenured veterans.
If Flynn doesn’t take the step forward that his supporters hope he will, he could be in line for a quick axing. Porter could be sent away with a relatively small financial penalty for the Raptors, and ageless greybeard Garrett Temple is on a minimum contract that will not weigh Toronto down much.
Will Jeff Dowtin make the Toronto Raptors?
Dowtin, who looked like a superior player to Flynn at times last season, has shown he can be an NBA player on the back of his terrific defense, speed, and effort. While Nick Nurse, one of his earliest and loudest champions, is in Philadelphia, Dowtin’s style could win over a new coaching staff.
If the Raptors cut Dowtin, he would transfer over to the Philadelphia 76ers organization. The G League rights to Dowtin were acquired by the Delaware Blue Coats. If they sour on him, Nick Nurse could work his magic with another of his former players.
