This landmark event pays tribute to Carter’s tremendous impact on the franchise and the evolution of basketball in Canada.

Carter, often regarded as one of the greatest dunkers in NBA history, played for the Raptors from 1998 to 2004, during which time he became a cultural icon and an ambassador for the game. His explosive athleticism and remarkable scoring ability captured the hearts of fans not only in Toronto but across the globe. Carter's contributions helped lay the groundwork for the NBA's growing popularity in Canada, paving the way for the Toronto Raptors to become an integral part of the league.

The ceremony began with a moving tribute video highlighting Carter's career, showcasing his most iconic dunks, clutch performances, and charitable work in the Toronto community. The crowd erupted in a standing ovation as the video concluded, with many fans sporting retro Carter jerseys, creating a colorful sea of purple and red.

The Carter effect will stand the test of time

Raptors President Masai Ujiri had the honor of introducing Vince Carter, beginning his energetic tribute with heartfelt remarks about the key figures who contributed to the legacy of No. 15, as well as a description of the man affectionately known as "Air Canada." During the jersey retirement ceremony, Ujiri stated:

"He is, he is, a legend! He's an icon! He's Half-Man, Half Amazing! He is the Vince Carter effect, right? Yes. He built our community, he helped put Toronto on the map! Yes. He taught us how to fly, and those who don't know how to fly, he taught us how to dream how to fly! Yes. He's a legend! "

Two other Raptors legends, Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan, are frequently considered deserving of their own jersey retirements at Scotiabank Arena. Both players honored Vince Carter with sincere statements:

"Vince. Half-man, Half-amazing. One of the greatest basketball players to ever play basketball. Currently have the record for most seasons played. Raptors legend. And most importantly, my friend. It's an honour to shoot this video to have you going up top... first. In a franchise that you put on a map. A franchise that loves you. And a franchise that will always, always, always have 15 in the rafters. Love you, brother. Appreciate you as always. I'll see you on the golf course. Congratulations!"
Kyle Lowry
"Big shout out to Vince. Big congratulations to you, your family, to your legacy. It's gonna be a special moment seeing that jersey go up, man. Nobody deserves it more than you. You know, the things you did for that country, when it comes to basketball, you changed the game. It's a special moment... One of my all-time favourites. Enjoy it. "
DeMar DeRozan

Legendary Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry, who has a personal connection to Vince Carter through his father, Dell Curry, who played alongside Carter on the Toronto Raptors, also took the time to honor the esteemed No. 15 in a special video message:

"It's beyond well deserved. You represented not only the city of Toronto, the organization, all of Canada, but the NBA at a high level. I remember watching you play with my Dad, it was early 2000 Vinsanity days. They were truly special. Having lived in Toronto, been a part of the organization, watching y'all play. Seeing how the community gathered around what you were able to create, and the energy you were able to galvanize was truly special. Playing 1-on-1 against you after practice. I knew you took it easy on me as a kid. That meant a lot... Vinsanity will forever live on!"
Stephen Curry

In addition to those featured in the video messages, several NBA players and legends in their own right took to social media to express their support for Vince Carter's jersey retirement, honoring him as an all-time great.

As the rafters of Scotiabank Arena were adorned with Carter's retired jersey, fans took a moment to reflect on how one player can redefine a franchise and inspire a generation. Carter's legacy, enriched by his remarkable on-court achievements and his unwavering commitment to the community, stands as a powerful testament to how sports can unite and inspire people. The retirement of his jersey signifies not merely an end, but the ongoing continuation of a legacy that will resonate through the annals of basketball history.
