Raptors general manager Bobby Webster will be sticking around for the foreseeable future. Webster recently agreed to a five-year contract extension, giving one of Toronto’s top decision-makers long-term security.

Webster’s extension gives Toronto front office stability

The organization has shown faith in Webster’s ability to help construct a winning team. It is now up to Webster to prove that faith is not misguided. This extension should better allow him to do that.

The general manager position is one of the most powerful in sports. A strong front office can help orchestrate a potential dynasty, as Sam Presti has done in Oklahoma City. A struggling one can make repeated missteps that cost a team years of unnecessary rebuilding.

When a general manager is on a short contract, there can be pressure to win right away out of fear of losing the job. That can put a franchise in a dangerous position. It may lead to a general manager trading away future draft picks in 'win-now' moves, even when those deals are not in the best interest of the team’s long-term goals.

Webster is now locked into a long-term contract. He has the freedom to help build a championship-level team without the immediate fear of losing his job if the results do not come right away. That is good news for Raptors fans.

The Raptors’ expectations should only rise from here

Now, the questions will turn to how Webster intends to help turn Toronto into a championship-level team. Just as importantly, what timeline does he envision for that transformation?

Before Toronto is ready to reach that tier, Webster will need to find more spacing and offensive creation. He will also need to determine which players truly fit alongside Scottie Barnes on a potential championship-level Raptors team. Immanuel Quickley, RJ Barrett, Brandon Ingram and Jakob Poeltl are all impact players, but Webster has to decide which pieces are part of the long-term answer.

For this five-year extension to be viewed as a success, Toronto should be much closer to contention by the end of the deal. Five years is an eternity in the NBA, and the Raptors already have a young, promising core in place.

This season was considered a resounding success largely because Toronto blew past expectations. Not many people thought the Raptors would push a team like Cleveland to seven games at the beginning of the season. But they did. Now, Toronto’s expectations are much higher.

Webster has the security to build patiently, but that patience has to lead somewhere. By the end of this contract, the Raptors should no longer be talking about potential. They should be a legitimate threat in the Eastern Conference.
