The Raptors often find themselves on the short end of the stick, feeling like little brothers in a big brother world that is the NBA. I'm sure many Raptors fans can attest that, upon seeing the newly released 2025-26 regular season schedule, Toronto caught next to no break when it comes to the early opposition to kick off the year.
I’m not discounting the Raptors’ ability to get the job done; their fighting spirit is always present, and they’ll do everything they can to rack up those W’s. However, their first ten opponents aren’t exactly murderers’ row, but they’re certainly no cake walk either. While it's always nice to have a favorable position to win, I personally believe in the trial-by-fire approach to life. It’s not really a life proverb to be handed everything on a silver platter.
Raptors must surprise the league despite their tough season start
So why not see this early season schedule as the perfect opportunity to prove the doubters wrong and to make a statement in the league? I truly believe this version of the Toronto Raptors is looking to set off tremors in the NBA, no matter how tough the matchups.
It won't be easy, as Toronto prepares to face competition more on their playing field like the Atlanta Hawks, Memphis Grizzlies, San Antonio Spurs, and Philadelphia 76ers. But the Raptors have shown, even just last season, that it's not always about who they're up against. Toronto can dominate a powerhouse like the Warriors or Celtics, yet battle tooth-and-nail with teams like Portland or Washington.
The middle of November offers a much more favorable schedule for the Raptors, but in a season as open as 2025-26, Toronto can't afford to stay on the outside looking in and just chase late-season glory. They've been dealt this hand, but honestly, they're not completely handicapped.
And to that point, if the Raptors can put East teams like Milwaukee, Atlanta, Philly, and especially Cleveland on notice right from the start, it would firmly establish them as a team not to be overlooked or taken lightly.
Of course, it’s obvious that every team’s goal is to go out and win — that’s just NBA 101. But the Raptors are in a unique position here. The urgency is even greater now because many people don’t believe they’ll be anything special this season. Overcome the tough opponents early on, and if that doesn't grab attention and earn respect across basketball circles, I don't know what will.
