It's always great to see former Raptors players thriving and succeeding, no matter what endeavor they pursue.
Ex-Raptors star Norman Powell recently stole the spotlight for Team Jamaica during the 2027 FIBA World Cup Americas Pre-Qualifiers against Costa Rica this past Saturday.
In Team Jamaica's 80-76 win over Costa Rica, Powell’s standout performance was truly a one-man affair. He led the team with 34 points on 52.9% shooting from the field and 55.6% from three, sinking 5-of-9 attempts. He also contributed one rebound, two assists, three steals, and posted a +10 plus/minus.

If you recall, it was some time ago when I mentioned Team Jamaica’s interest in recruiting the Raptors’ own Scottie Barnes, along with other NBA players such as Devin Vassell, Isaiah Stewart, and the talented Thompson twins, Ausar and Amen. But Powell remains the only NBA name so far to have suited for Jamaica, and the August 9 showcase clearly demonstrated why he is undeniably Jamaica's prized crown jewel and top scoring threat.
Powell has long been known for his ability to ignite an offense on any given night. Though he's bounced around a few teams since his days as a Raptor, his most recent, MIP-worthy campaign has truly put the NBA world on notice — showing just how effective Powell can be, even at 32 years old.
I believe it's evident in the Miami Heat's decision to take a chance on Powell this summer — adding him to the team. I think this fit will prove very helpful for the Heat's offense, especially considering their struggles after the Jimmy Butler trade last season.
Powell did not suit up for Jamaica's follow-up game against Mexico on August 10, which they lost 61-90. Nevertheless, thanks to Powell’s invaluable contribution on August 9, Jamaica has secured a spot in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Americas Qualifiers. According to the official @jamaica_basketball Instagram page, "This is the first time in our country’s history to reach this stage in international play."
We’ll keep tuning into Team Jamaica’s hopeful FIBA dreams, and down the line, Powell might be joined by some NBA cavalry ... just imagine what Scottie Barnes and company could bring to the squad.
