3 Destinations for Raptors to sign-and-trade Gary Trent Jr.
The relationship between Gary Trent Jr. and the Toronto Raptors finally appears to be over.
It seemed like it would be over last summer, but Trent unexpectedly picked up his player option and hung around another year. That decision was supposed to build up his market, but a lackluster season and a competitive market may be pushing Trent to accept a deal at less than the Mid-Level Exception.
The Raptors won't be bringing back Gary Trent Jr.
That deal won't be coming from the Raptors, who don't have space under the luxury tax to offer him that kind of deal. It also doesn't make sense for Trent to take a smaller deal to stay in Toronto as their shooting guard rotation is already jam-packed.
Last season Trent got all the playing time he could handle, but playing for a losing team and seeing his volume diminish didn't do him any favors. Now with Bruce Brown still around and young wings in Gradey Dick, Ochai Agbaji and Ja'Kobe Walter on the roster, there isn't room for Trent to return to Toronto.
What the Raptors could do, however, is work to facillitate a sign-and-trade to send Trent to another team, perhaps using him as a vessel to take back unwanted salary or for a team to get creative in their offseason moves. Let's look at three teams that could be interested in a sign-and-trade for Trent and what such deals could look like.
