3 Offseason trade targets for Raptors to accelerate their rebuild
The Toronto Raptors should be applauded for finally facing the music and trading Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby before they walked away for nothing this upcoming summer. Yet in the midst of the bustling activity of a team finally committing to a rebuild, the Raptors...didn't commit to a rebuild.
They traded Anunoby for two established young players and a second-round pick instead of a pick-heavy package. Pascal Siakam brought back a few picks but also a veteran contributor in Bruce Brown; neither trade added any rookies or prospects to develop. The Raptors then pivoted to trade for Kelly Olynyk as a veteran big to back up their veteran starting center.
The Raptors could make more moves this summer to prioritize the future, accumulating draft assets and using their cap space to take on bad contracts instead of trying to sign win-now veterans. On the other hand, they may look at the Eastern Conference and see an opportunity to push in and try to be back in the playoffs next season.
If their plan is to bounce back instead of take it slow, what sort of players could be available on the trade market?
No. 3: Gary Payton II
The Golden State Warriors are heading toward an offseason of change, and the new league rules regarding expensive teams will drive the Warriors to get off of money; owner Joe Lacob has already declared that to be the plan. Anyone not named Stephen Curry is likely fair game.
Gary Payton II is one of the league's best on-ball defenders, especially at the point of attack. He is fast, strong, long and has exceptional instincts, and he is an absolute ballhawk getting his hands on balls. He is an improved shooter, albeit a streaky one, but he has grown as a cutter and screener with the Warriors. He would fill a significant need for the Raptors and be a bench defensive weapon for head coach Darko Rajakovic.
