3 Potential free agent Raptors targets with ties to Immanuel Quickley
No. 1: Obi Toppin
Immanuel Quickley was taken 25th overall in the 2020 NBA Draft, but he was actually the second New York Knicks player selected. Dayton forward Obi Toppin went eighth overall and he and Quickley entered the league together as New York rookies.
Toppin has a very specific lane that he fills; he fills it spectacularly well, but sometimes a team needs a different lane filled. Toppin is a high-flying athlete who loves to run in transition and make timely cuts. Those skills were not utilized much on a Tom Thibodeau run Knicks team, but they have flourished on the run-and-gun Indiana Pacers.
Toppin averaged a career-best 10.3 points and 3.9 rebounds this year while shooting a sublime 40.3 percent from 3-point range catching passes from Tyrese Haliburton. He may be looking for a contract this summer that the Pacers don't want to commit to, especially after trading for Pascal Siakam at his same position and drafting Jarace Walker.
Could the Raptors therefore be a logical landing spot for Toppin? They could use the athleticism and activity, and both Immanuel Quickley and RJ Barrett can recruit Toppin after spending a few seasons in New York together. He could juice their transition offense in a way that they don't have right now, and perhaps he and Scottie Barnes could be the "bigs" in a smallball lineup.
