Not what they hoped for

The Toronto Raptors didn't make a single significant move this summer, but to mix sports metaphors, they hit a lot of singles.

They drafted four different players, three of whom are on guaranteed roster spots. They added Davion Mitchell and Sasha Vezenkov in a trade, then agreed to a buyout with Venzekov. They signed Bruno Fernando to shore up their center depth.

What they didn't do was trade Bruce Brown, nor Kelly Olynyk or Jakob Poeltl. Their intention likely is still to trade Brown, but right now he looks to be on track to start the season with the team.

What do those moves, and lack of moves, mean for the returning players on this roster? Which players may have expected or hoped for a role that they are now in jeopardy of missing out on?

Let's take a look at three players and see how their roles may be evaporating before their very eyes.

No. 3: Garrett Temple

Last season, Garrett Temple played a well-defined role on the Toronto Raptors. He was the team's fifth guard, a veteran who could come in when called upon, handle the ball, and knock down shots. Even in the midst of tumultuous roster reconstruction, that role was more-or-less static.

Now that Temple, the league's 6th-oldest player, is returning for another season, it seems like he will be more of a veteran mentor than someone with any hope of actually playing. The Raptors have a pair of backup point guards now in Davion Mitchell and Jamal Shead, and the shooting guard room is extremely crowded with both veterans and young players who deserve playing time.

Temple may not play more than a smattering of garbage time minutes all season. After playing 27 games and 289 total minutes last season -- even starting two games -- he looks to be riding the pine this time around.
