No. 1: Gradey Dick

Things appeared to be lining up for second-year wing Gradey Dick to start for the Toronto Raptors next season.

He had a strong finish to the 2023-24 season, stepping up in the midst of injuries and proving himself on an NBA stage. He followed that up with a good showing in Summer League before hurting his ankle. His shooting and size looked to be perfect to plug into the starting 2 spot, especially with Gary Trent Jr. walking in free agency.

Unfortunately for Gradey Dick, Bruce Brown didn't walk away, as the team picked up his team option. What's more, with a trade not materializing this summer, it's very likely that the Raptors reason their way into starting Bruce Brown.

He is a proven championship veteran, which always appeals to coaches. What's more, the Raptors will want to showcase him for a trade, and what better way to do that than as the connective piece for the Raptors' best lineup?

Even the Raptors' moves to add backup point guards in Mitchell and Shead eliminates the need for Brown to be the backup point guard, allowing him to start and focus on his off-ball role.

That could very well mean a more limited role for Gradey Dick. That doesn't mean he won't see playing time at all; he's clearly going to have a role on next year's team. Will he start? It's looking increasingly likely he won't, through no fault of his own.
