5 Free agents the Toronto Raptors can sign using the Mid-Level Exception
No. 2: Tobias Harris
The Toronto Raptors need shooting and they need frontcourt depth, and former Philadelphia 76ers forward Tobias Harris checks both boxes. He is coming off of a massive contract that was certainly an overpay, but it may be causing the market to over-correct, opening a window to sign Harris on a bargain contract.
If Harris were signed to the MLE, be that for just a couple of years or the full four, he could come off the bench behind Scottie Barnes and RJ Barrett or even start at the 3 between them. If Harris truly bounces back the Raptors would have a good decision to make between keeping him or flipping him to another team for value.
No. 1: De'Anthony Melton
Perhaps the No. 1 free agent on the Raptors' board this summer is De'Anthony Melton, the kind of player who looks like a seamless fit with the players currently on the roster. The 6'2" guard has a long wingspan and can defend multiple position, including the point of attack, a major need on Toronto's roster.
Melton is more of a combo guard than a pure point guard, but he has enough ball-handling and shot creation chops to pair with another on-ball player as Immanuel Quickley's backup. More often he would play alongside Quickley, taking on the primary defensive responsibility and spacing the court on offense. Melton shot 37.9 percent from deep in two seasons with the 76ers.
The 76ers are big-game hunting in free agency this summer, and it would not be surprising if they cut Melton loose, or simply presume on him to wait and open the window for another team to step in and sign him. He may have a suitor above the MLE, but that's a reasonable amount to offer on the open market given his lack of scoring and what he has made thus far in his career.
Melton would be a steal at the MLE and an excellent fit with the rest of the Raptors' core pieces. If they get a window to make the offer they should make it immediately and see if he would consider a move across the border.
