Ranking Toronto Raptors free agents by likelihood to return next season
No. 2: Garrett Temple probably won't be back
Every NBA team needs a long-time veteran who can help to mentor the young players and give the roster personal experience and wisdom to help them weather tough periods of the season or deal with unexpectedly emotional situations. Garrett Temple was that player for the Raptors last season.
Do they bring him back simply to fill that role? If they do, it won't be because of his play on the court. Now 38 years old, Temple doesn't have much left in the tank, and the Raptors will likely look to get younger at the position. If Temple does play one more season in the NBA, it's probably on a different team than Toronto.
No. 1: Don't expect Gary Trent Jr. to be back
If Immanuel Quickley is at one end of the free agent spectrum as essentially a lock to return to the Raptors, Gary Trent Jr. may be on the other end of that spectrum as a player whose time in Toronto truly looks to be over.
That may not be the consensus opinion around the organization or those covering it, but all of the pieces seem to point to that. Trent had a good shooting season but wasn't able to move the needle toward winning. The Raptors traded for RJ Barrett and Ochai Agbaji and drafted Gradey Dick, three new shooting guards to replace Trent.
It appears that the Raptors are ready to move on, and they will therefore not bid highly on his services this summer. Trent is a good shooter with a decent track record and should have a decent market for his services; he won't be making $20 million per season, but he should at the very least have offers at the Full Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level, around $13 million per season.
