Trade No. 3: Kelly Oylynk from the Utah Jazz

The Trade: Otto Porter Jr., Kira Lewis Jr., 2024 first-round pick (worst of 4 teams) to the Utah Jazz for Kelly Olynyk and Ochai Agbaji

The Toronto Raptors took a swing on Otto Porter Jr., signing him to a multi-year contract in the aftermath of his championship run with the Golden State Warriors. Injuries kept him from making the impact the team looked for from him as a stretch-4 to space the court around the team’s stars, most of whom were shaky shooters but thrived attacking the basket.

At the Trade Deadline the Raptors took a swing on another stretch big to accomplish the same goal, sending Porter (and Kira Lewis Jr.) to the Utah Jazz in exchange for Kelly Olynyk and Ochai Agbaji. The cost? The 2024 first-round pick just acquired in the Pascal Siakam trade, which landed at 29th; the Jazz selected USC guard Isaiah Collier.

The myriad of injuries the Raptors sustained in the back half of the season prevented Kelly Olynyk from getting to play in his ideal place in the rotation, and he is clearly miscast as the starting center. The Raptors did sign him to a two-year extension that kicks in this year, and he’ll get run playing alongside Scottie Barnes and company this upcoming season. Agbaji, on the other hand, received plenty of playing time down the stretch and did very little with it; he may get his fourth year option declined by the Raptors.

Would the Raptors be better off with Olynyk and Agbaji for a combined $17 million, or with another $15 million in space and having drafted someone like Kyle Filipowski or Tyler Smith in that role instead? It’s probably the latter, but Olynyk is a highly-skilled player who likely has trade value this year if the Raptors want to move him. It was a questionable move at the time, and it looks slightly worse now.
