This past season, as the Raptors transitioned from their retool/rebuild stage back to a playoff atmosphere, perhaps no other player suffered a massive fall from grace like Gradey Dick.

Toronto put a lot of faith in him when they used their lottery selection on Dick in the 2023 NBA Draft, where he quickly emerged as a key developmental piece as the Raptors were building out a new era of playoff-caliber youngsters in the Six.

Unfortunately for Dick, that grace period fizzled quickly as the Raptors looked to pin point the truly impactful youngsters who could raise their competitive ceiling. While names like Ja'Kobe Walter, Jamal Shead, Collin Murray-Boyles, and even Jamison Battle or AJ Lawson showed promise — Gradey Dick didn't quite establish himself to be rightfully alongside that crop of young guns.

After becoming a tentaive rotation player post-All-Star break and not receiving any meaningful playoff minutes at all, all signs suggest that Gradey Dick’s Raptors future hangs in the balance this offseason.

Or does it?

If you have been closely following Raptors social media right now, there has been a trend of video posts dedicated to Gradey Dick highlights. In fact, at the time of writing, we are actually on "Day 9 of the Gradey hive clocking back in" as the latest social media video caption reads.

Now, if you're just a casual Raptors watcher who tuned out of the loop as the season came to an end, you might encounter these posts and think Dick was a high-impact star of the year. But I can't imagine many folks didn't ride the wave as Toronto returned to the playoffs, so fans are well aware that Dick was barely a needle-mover when it really mattered.

Raptors' Gradey Dick highlight packages garnering a mixed fan reaction

For this reason, much of the fan response in the comments/replies point out the irony: these posts and the admin's rationale behind them seem to be aimed merely at raising the 22-year-old's trade value to maximize the Raptors' return on their otherwise plummeted investment.

Again, this is a player who wasn't part of the Raptors' spirited playoff push and instead, watched his teammates shine as he rode the bench.

It's important to note that, Sandro Mamukelashvili, another Raptors player who's future is up in the air this offseason (albeit as a likely free agent), has also been getting similar highlight posts as of late. However, for Gradey Dick to be the only other Raptors player in that conversation looks a bit tone deaf, when there are more justified highlight packages galore for prominent fixtures like CMB, RJ Barrett, Ja'Kobe Walter, and of course, Scottie Barnes.

There remains some hope that Dick can bounce back, and that the Raptors staff still see a future for him within the organization, as Darko Rajakovic mentioned in his end-of-season presser. However, it doesn't change the fact that based on the lackluster late-season sample from Dick, these posts received a largely tongue-in-cheek reaction from a significant portion of Raptors fans.
