Raptors' matchup creates the perfect stage for RJ Barrett to relive playoff glory

Can the "Maple Mamba" chase old success... this time for his hometown team?

I'm sure the entire Raptors locker room — from the players to the coaching staff to the front office personnel — raised their arms in triumph after clinching a secure playoff spot following their win over the Brooklyn Nets to finish the 2025-26 regular season. There was definitely reason to be biting our nails in worry since the Raptors were teetering around play-in territory, but they made it out.

Now, it’s just a matter of days before we witness Raptors playoff basketball for the first time since the 2021-22 campaign. That’s definitely a long time coming for Raptors Nation.

But I think it’s safe to say that this playoff berth means everything to RJ Barrett, the Raptors' sometimes polarizing hometown star. Barrett has been the subject of trade rumors for two seasons now, with reports of his potential departure surfacing at last year’s deadline and more rumors swirling around this past one.

Despite all the uncertainty, the 25-year-old Toronto native managed to get through those tough times and survive to get to this major turning point. I can even recall Barrett expressing his thoughts on the early trade rumors, saying he just has to tune out the noise, play through it all, and commit to a winning culture for his beloved hometown.

While we can’t yet predict what the future holds for Barrett with the Raptors beyond this season, it’s clear to me that this chance to step up for his hometown team is the ultimate pot of gold reward —especially for a guy who’s faced a lot recently, whether it’s personal struggles or injury setbacks that disrupted his early season momentum.

Raptors beat reporter Josh Lewenberg even highlighted Barrett's excitement in a quote that was recently posted to X, where the 25-year-old wing said: "Man, I don't even know what to say. I was always one of the ones saying when you do things the right way the results are going to come. I'm very proud of this group."

Which brings me to the positive news to consider going into this critical first-round series against the Cavs. Mind you, RJ Barrett has experience against Cleveland in a postseason atmosphere from his time with the New York Knicks.

RJ Barrett’s playoff history vs. Cavaliers could tip the scales for the Raptors

In the first round of the 2023 NBA Playoffs, Barrett's Knicks squad made light work of the Cavaliers winning the series 4-1. During that series, Barrett had a rough go in the first two games but completely turned the corner to come up big with three straight efficient and impactful performances.

Keep in mind that the Knicks were the fifth seed going into that series, just as the Raptors are now. It certainly gives off a sense of deja vu for RJ Barrett and feels like a full circle moment to replicate for Toronto.

Times have changed of course, but we shouldn't forget that Donovan Mitchell remains a key player for the Cavs and Barrett’s track record against him is a point worth noting. This factor only reinforces the idea that Barrett is the Raptors player entering this Cavs series with something extra to prove. It's the ideal platform for Barrett to rise to the occasion and demonstrate what he’s truly capable of for the hometown team he’s proud to represent.

And who knows? Perhaps if we see "Playoff RJ" in the full swing of things, it could just be Barrett's golden ticket to a longer, more secure future with the organization.
