The Toronto Raptors' 2024-25 campaign had a rocky beginning, marked by a disappointing 136-106 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on home soil. In a commendable bounce-back effort, the Toronto Raptors secured a hard-fought 115-107 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on October 25th.

The Raptors' victory was not without its challenges, as the team grappled with free throw struggles and lost three players to fouls. Furthermore, the team was significantly undermined by the absence of five key players: Ja'Kobe Walter, Bruce Brown, and Kelly Olynyk, who did not participate in the season opener, along with RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley, the latter of whom sustained an injury during the game against the Cavaliers.

Nevertheless, the Philadelphia 76ers faced their own roster challenges, lacking key superstars Paul George and Joel Embiid. It somewhat leveled the playing field; however, the Raptors still faced a challenging, perennial playoff contender in the Eastern Conference. The Raptors faced criticism for their poor defensive performance in a blowout loss to Cleveland, placing pressure on the young and inexperienced team to improve and demonstrate their ability to excel defensively. In their loss to the Cavaliers, the Raptors' typically reliable defenders struggled significantly, adversely affecting the outcome of the game.

Sometimes, the best remedy for a weakness is to confront it directly, regardless of how difficult that may be. The Raptors recognized the need to improve their defense, and this commitment proved to be the decisive factor in their victory over the 76ers. Despite moments of tunnel vision and inexperience, this version of the Toronto Raptors showcased a gritty defensive toughness reminiscent of the team's storied past in their matchup against the Philadelphia 76ers. After fans and media expressed disappointment over the team's lackluster performance against Cleveland, several roster members who had faced criticism rose to the occasion.

Raptors' defense looked a lot better against the 76ers

For example, Scottie Barnes struggled mightily in the season opener against Cleveland, looking like a shell of his former self. However, against the 76ers, Barnes showcased his abilities as both a defensive and offensive force. He recorded an impressive 27 points, along with two steals and one block. Additionally, struggling forward Ochai Agbaji, whose NBA future seemed uncertain due to his lack of development, emerged as a key contributor in the victory over the 76ers. He demonstrated decisive cutting to the basket and recorded impressive defensive stats, including two steals. Young forward Jonathan Mogbo emerged as a key contributor to Toronto's victory, recording three blocks and two steals, along with a team-high +21 in plus/minus.

The current iteration of the Toronto Raptors is young and full of potential for growth. This developing core deserves some leeway as they navigate errors along the way. While it's important not to excuse every poor performance, the Raptors have shown resilience after facing criticism for an underwhelming outing against the Cavaliers. They regrouped and fought hard against the Philadelphia 76ers. Not every team makes it to the playoffs, but even those expected to fall short can uplift their morale and fanbase by putting up a competitive fight. The Toronto Raptors have silenced their critics, demonstrating that no team can simply overlook them as easy competition.

We're entering a new era of Raptors basketball, with these young players striving to establish a cohesive identity and consistency. While it's valid to point out their flaws, their commitment to addressing inefficiencies—particularly on defense—is a promising sign for this rebuilding team as they work to put the pieces together.
