Toronto Raptors: End Of Year Report Cards
OG Anunoby
OG Anunoby looked to build upon an impressive rookie campaign. However, every time the second year Small Forward got going he faced another roadblock. A series of injuries and a personal leave hampered 21-year old’s season before it could really get going.
Despite appearing in only 67 games there were many bright spots for the young forward. One of those includes a 21 point outburst against Cleveland on December 21st, 15 of his points came in just the opening quarter.
Anunoby scored a career-high 22 points against the Wizards on February 13th. He shot 64 percent from the field and 50 percent from three-point range in that contest.
Toronto’s standout Sophomore was rewarded for his play during All-Star Weekend 2019. He was selected to represent “Team World” at the Rising Stars Challenge for the second straight year. Anunoby scored 12 points in the contest.
The 21-year old’s value to the Raptors lies in his defense. It is truly remarkable how in just his second year in the NBA Anunoby is arguably Toronto’s second best defender.
The Toronto Raptors greatly missed Anunoby in the postseason. There were times when it was evident that the team needed his defensive tenacity. Toronto also missed him in small ball lineups where he could play at the Power Forward or Centre position.
Anunoby is in for a raise once his rookie deal expires. This season he earned $1.9 million and next season he will earn close to $2.3 million dollars.
Despite not playing in the postseason, Anunoby still remains an important piece of Toronto’s future.
The sky is the limit for the former Indiana Hoosier. With a full summer ahead of him Anunoby will work harder than ever before. Do not be surprised if he slides into the starting lineup next season.
