One Drake lyric for every player on the Toronto Raptors
By Lior Kozai
Bonus: The team as a whole
"“Bittersweet celebrations, I know I can’t change what happened” (Furthest Thing)"
At this point, we all know what happened: Toronto won the NBA championship last June, and Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard left in free agency to the Los Angeles Clippers three weeks later.
This entire offseason has been a celebration for the Raptors and their fans, perhaps exemplified best by none other than Drake bringing out a giant replica of the Larry O’Brien trophy at OVO Fest in Toronto. The upcoming 2019-20 season will likely feature some more celebrating for the defending champs, from ring night on October 22 to the Raptors’ first-ever Christmas Day home game.
The elephant in the room, of course, is that it’s quite strange for Leonard to be absent from the continued celebrations of the franchise’s greatest achievement. As much as the title was a team effort, Leonard was the driving force behind it, particularly in the second and third playoff rounds.
It’s clear that no one with the Toronto Raptors could’ve changed Leonard’s mind and gotten him to re-sign. As great as the championship feeling must be for the team – and it can’t be overstated how incredible it is – Leonard leaving makes the whole thing just a tad bittersweet.
