Cameron Payne

With the Jeremy Lin addition not working out, the Toronto Raptors will be giving Cameron Payne a strong look to fill that role as a backup facilitator. Payne was a lottery pick in 2015 at 14th overall but has fallen short of expectations in Oklahoma City and Chicago. He will likely be battling Isaiah Taylor for that spot and will have to battle a number of other players who Nick Nurse may want to experiment at point guard.

Payne has had his fair share of injuries starting from when he was playing for the Thunder. However, he has still been underwhelming for the most part. He had a fairly efficient shooting last season in his 19 games for the Cavaliers. Everything else before that has consisted of low efficiency on low scoring even for a backup point guard. His defense not standing out doesn’t help either.

Payne is only playing for a backup point guard role at the most, but a spot on the roster is all but guaranteed. He was able to impress mainly based on his summer league play, and as a shooter, he automatically brings value to this team. If things don’t work out for him this year, It will be hard to convince other teams to offer him partially or fully guaranteed contract money.
