Malachi Flynn

The San Diego State product has been passed over by Banton in the rotation, as he has not taken the developmental leap in the right direction that most expected him to make this year. Flynn has spent most of the 2021-22 season rooted to the bench thanks to Nurse’s hesitancy to trust him.

Flynn has averaged just 2.5 points per game on 34% shooting this season. After winning an Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month Award and averaging 19.7 minutes per game during his rookie season, Flynn’s minutes have shrunk to just 8.2 in 2021-22. It’s safe to say that this is not ideal.

The Toronto Raptors might be disappointed in Malachi Flynn.

Flynn has underperformed to the degree where it’s not a sure thing that he’ll return in 2022-23. While Toronto picked up a third-year option before the season, will holding onto a third-string point guard that is older than Gary Trent Jr. really be the wisest strategy in the world?

Flynn, who received a 905 assignment recently, is getting to the point where he may need a fresh start elsewhere. While he is still showing just enough to keep the Raptors enticed, he needs to pick up the pace sooner rather than later if he wants to return to the team next season.

Grade: D+
